When spring has sprung, and it's time to get out into the garden, it's a great time to introduce your youngster to the joy of gardening. It's a bug that naturally take root in a young child, and many gardeners will recall the time they spent as a little one in the company of their parents, digging in the early spring, dropping seeds into the earth impatiently hoping for immediate yields, and the ultimate joy of helping the harvest, perhaps eating as many strawberries or cherry tomatoes in the garden as managed to find their way back to the house.
However, with toddlers and youngsters the ability to use typical garden tools is limited. Not only is the size a problem for their small hands, but there can be some real potential to harm themselves with the sharp edges and sheer weight of many tools.
However, there are a wide range of tools designed for out little friends. There is a temptation to buy some of the cheaper plastic tools that can be found at the local Walmart, but usually the plastic tools are better suited for the sandbox, and will only frustrate your kids when they try to help in the garden.
A popular choice is to get a small tool set that has a little canvas or cloth tool carrier, complete with handles. Usually equipped with a little hoe, trowel, and rake, these afford all the joy of digging in the soil with complete safety. You can also find larger tools with handles just over 2 feet long and sized just right for the two to four year old.
Little pairs of gardeners gloves are a hit with some of the little ones, although many relish the joy of digging barehanded in the garden soil, which if it well prepared is great for digging since it will be relatively loose and un-compacted.
One item that is surprisingly popular is a wheelbarrow for little ones. There are actually a couple of models of these to be found, with the smaller size and weight that a four year old might handle. Speaking of handles, when looking for a good wheelbarrow for your youngster check out the handles to make sure that the finish is smooth and the edges of the metal work are rolled and smooth as well.
